Splitwise

app redesign

october 2023 to june 2024

with Hannah Moser, Gregor Baars

Why did we choose Splitwise to redesign? The app addresses everyday problems and needs that many people face — managing shared expenses. Although Splitwise offers many useful features, our own experiences revealed areas where usability and functionality could be improved.

To get an overview of the app's structure and navigation, we began by creating a screen flow of the existing app, we compared Splitwise with other apps that serve the same purpose. Then we categorized and evaluated all of the app's functions in their original state. We then considered which functions should be further developed, removed, or retained.

analysis

The user group consisted of people aged 16 to 45 who regularly share expenses with friends, family, or colleagues. To gain an understanding of their different needs, we conducted interviews with app users. These provided us with valuable insights to improve Splitwise. Based on the user interviews, we created four different personas.

user research

In an app, many functions are distributed across multiple screens. To understand where each piece of information should be placed, we created an information architecture. This gave us a clear hierarchy of functions that we could then incorporate into our first sketches.

design

We started by converting our favorite paper sketches into Figma wireframes. Then, we selected three key screens of the app, and each of us designed three different versions of them. This process gave us several design variations that we could combine. Once our design was finalized, we worked on every screen, created components, and developed a comprehensive style guide.

The final design features a refreshed interface with enhanced functionality and a vibrant, inviting aesthetic. Based on our extensive analysis, user feedback, and thoughtful design process, we are confident that the redesign will greatly enhance the overall user experience.
